Hamburg’s cultural sector provides work for more than 30,000 people, including the artists, and generates a total annual turnover of € 4.37 bn. Hamburg is one of the leading cultural centres in Europe, with approximately 50,000 visitors per day. About 20% of the 111 million same-day visitors who travel to Hamburg each year do so to attend cultural events, and their average spending amount of € 43.50 adds up to a demand volume of € 870 million. The city’s diverse cultural landscape boasts 40 theatres, 60 museums and 100 music clubs. The theatrical stages are recognized as being among the best in the country, both in terms of artistic quality and with regard to their self-funding rates. The citizens of Hamburg identify strongly with their city’s cultural institutions. Thus, there are many sponsors who are ready to actively support a wide range of cultural projects, as exemplified by the € 62.8 million donated or pledged so far for the construction of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. Hamburg is also known as Germany’s hotbed of design and architecture.
