In economic terms, Hamburg is by far the most successful German federal state. This status has been confirmed by the 2011 federal state ranking conducted by the Initiative Neue Soziale Marktwirtschaft (INSM) and the business weekly "Wirtschaftswoche". Reflecting developments from 2007 to 2010, the survey shows Hamburg in the lead in gross domestic product, disposable income and taxing capacity.

This development is set to continue into the future. The motto "Hamburg - Responsible Growth" underscores the city’s strategic objective: to sustain the stream of qualified and creative people moving to Hamburg from other parts of Germany and abroad.

In a 2011 federal state ranking published by WirtschaftsWoche and the Initiative Neue Soziale Marktwirtschaft, Hamburg tops the list for all of the following indicators:

  • Inhabitants 2007 to 2010: +1% (average: -0.6%)
  • Proportion of university graduates of total jobholders (highly qualified) 2007 to 2010: +1.1% (average: +0.7%)
  • Number of gainfully employed 2007 to 2010: +4.4% (average: +1.9%)

  • Hamburg has a gross domestic product, or annual economic output per capita, of € 49,638 (2010), the highest in Germany. The national average is € 30,566.
  • Disposable income per head of the population in Hamburg was € 24,137 in 2010, whilst the national average was € 18,983.
  • A state’s taxing capacity is an indicator of its economic power. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg shows a figure of € 4,228 per capita, the German average is € 2,128.
